Third Party

This is mandatory by law and covers legal and financial liabilities if your three-wheeler causes injury, death, or property damage to a third party.

Own Damage

This covers damage to your own three-wheeler due to accidents, fire, theft, natural disasters (like floods or earthquakes), and man-made events (like riots or vandalism). You can only buy this if you already have third-party insurance.

Comprehensive

includes both third-party and own damage cover. It offers wider protection, including optional add-ons like personal accident cover, engine protection, and roadside assistance.

Why is
Three Wheeler Insurance Important?

01

As per the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, it is compulsory to have at least third-party insurance to legally operate a three-wheeler on Indian roads.

02

For commercial use, valid insurance is essential to obtain or renew permits and fitness certificates, making it a legal and operational necessity.

03

In case of road accidents, insurance helps you manage repair costs or damages to your own vehicle under a comprehensive plan.

04

It ensures financial coverage if your vehicle causes injury, death, or property damage to a third party, reducing your personal

liability.

Top Benefits of Three Wheeler Insurance

Reduced Financial Burden

Insurance helps manage large expenses arising from accidents or vehicle loss, which would otherwise be paid out-of-pocket. This makes ownership more affordable and less risky in the long run.

Easy Claim Process

Most insurance companies provide a smooth and fast claim process, especially if your vehicle is repaired at network garages. This reduces downtime and ensures you get back on the road quickly.

Peace of Mind

Knowing your vehicle, yourself, and others are protected by insurance allows you to drive or operate your three-wheeler confidently. It reduces stress, especially in high-risk or busy areas.

Personal Accident Cover

This benefit offers compensation in case of death or permanent disability of the owner-driver due to an accident. It adds a layer of financial security for the vehicle owner and their family.

Own Damage Protection

A comprehensive policy covers damage to your own three-wheeler due to accidents, fire, theft, riots, or natural calamities. It saves you from high repair or replacement costs after unexpected incidents.

Third-Party Liability Cover

It provides financial coverage if your vehicle causes injury, death, or property damage to another person. This helps reduce your personal liability and ensures legal protection in case of disputes.

Legal Compliance

Three-wheeler insurance ensures that your vehicle meets the mandatory legal requirements under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. It protects you from penalties, fines, and legal issues during traffic checks or accidents.

Insurance Do's and Don'ts

Follow these best practices to get the most out of your Vehicle insurance policy.

Do's

Select the insurance type based on how you use your three-wheeler—commercial or personal—and consider the risks involved in your daily routes.

Do's

Always renew your insurance policy before it expires to avoid legal issues and ensure your vehicle stays continuously protected.

Do's

Carry all essential documents such as insurance papers, registration certificate, and driving license while operating your vehicle.

Do's

Take time to read and understand the terms, conditions, and exclusions of your insurance policy to avoid surprises during claim time.

Don'ts

Avoid driving your three-wheeler without at least third-party insurance—it’s illegal and can lead to heavy penalties.

Don'ts

Always report any accident or damage to your insurer as soon as possible to ensure a smooth and valid claim process.

Don'ts

Giving incorrect information during policy purchase or claims can lead to policy cancellation or denial of claims.

Don'ts

Avoid skipping add-ons like personal accident cover or roadside assistance, as they provide valuable benefits at a minimal additional cost.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Skipping Insurance Renewal

Many owners forget to renew their policy on time, leaving the vehicle uninsured and vulnerable to legal and financial risks.

Opting Basic Coverage Only

Choosing only third-party insurance may save money upfront but leaves your own vehicle unprotected against major damages.

Ignoring Policy Terms

Not reading or understanding the policy details can lead to confusion and claim rejection when you need help the most.

Delaying Claim Reporting

Waiting too long to report accidents or damages can make your claim invalid or delay the settlement process.

Providing False Information

Giving incorrect details during policy purchase or while filing a claim can result in denial or cancellation of the insurance.

Overlooking Add-On Covers

Avoiding useful add-ons like personal accident or engine protection can reduce the overall benefit of your insurance plan.

  • What is the validity of a motor insurance policy?
A standard motor insurance policy in India is valid for one year from the date of issuance. After this period, you need to renew your policy to continue enjoying the coverage. Some insurers now also offer long-term policies with validity for 2-3 years.
  • Can I change insurers during renewal?
Yes, you can switch to a different insurance provider when your policy is up for renewal. Make sure to initiate the process a few weeks before your current policy expires to avoid a coverage gap. You can also transfer your accumulated No Claim Bonus (NCB) to the new insurer.
  • What is a cashless garage?
A cashless garage is a service center that has a direct partnership with your insurance company. If you get your vehicle repaired at one of these garages after an accident, the insurer will settle the bills directly with the garage, eliminating the need for you to pay upfront and then file for reimbursement.
  • Does motor insurance cover accessories and modifications?
Standard motor insurance policies typically cover factory-fitted accessories but not aftermarket additions or modifications. However, you can get coverage for these by declaring them to your insurer and paying an additional premium. Failing to disclose modifications could lead to claim rejection.
  • How does No Claim Bonus (NCB) work?
No Claim Bonus is a discount on premium that you earn for each claim-free year. It starts at 20% after the first claim-free year and can go up to 50% after five consecutive claim-free years. NCB is transferable when you change your vehicle or insurer.
  • Can I drive someone else's insured vehicle?
Yes, you can drive someone else's insured vehicle with their permission. The insurance coverage follows the vehicle, not the driver. However, the driver must have a valid driving license and must not be in violation of any policy conditions such as driving under the influence of alcohol.
